how to brighten your resonance

SO much of the work that goes into voice transition is technical and repetitive exercises.

Instead of talking about anatomy or pulling out a spectrogram, in this video I’m going to show you how to find a lighter, brighter voice by taking on a character... or 2!

Grab your acting hat and give yourself permission to be playful, uninhibited, and weird.

FIRST CHARACTER:

The first character we’ll channel is a parent in a grocery store with their kids. The kids are begging for m&m’s and you turn around and say,

“if you don’t stop there are going to be consequences when we get in the car.”

It’s assertive, firm, but still loving. Be quiet as you can without whispering. You don’t want the nosey assholes in the line behind you overhear you threatening your children.

What did we achieve with the parent in line voice?... THIN FOLDS

By being quiet, and taking the bass out of the tone so that our voice didn’t carry, we thinned out the vocal folds making a lighter sound.

SECOND CHARACTER:

You’re at a park and a kid runs up to you crying. They just fell down and scraped their knee. You lean down and say,

“Oh no, did you hurt yourself? It’ll be okay.” Oozing with empathy.

What’s happening with that voice? Still thin folds, but with the addition of sweetness in the tone.

Switch back and forth between the two:

#1: In line at the store:

“If you don’t stop there are going to be consequences when we get in the car.”

#2: Kid with the scraped knee:

“Oh no, did you hurt yourself? It’ll be okay.”

Can you hear the change in those voices? Both have thin folds, but they’re different vibes.

What did this show us? We can take something as frustratingly difficult and technical as THIN folds and access it immediately by taking on the persona of a different character!
